Managing Deadlines at a UK University: A Strategy Guide

6 min read · 1 December 2024

How to plan a term's worth of assessments without burnout, and how to recover when you've left it too late.

Most UK students don't fail because they can't do the work. They fail because they can't manage the work. Here's how the strongest students plan their term.

Map the term in week one

Take every assignment from every module handbook and put it on one calendar. Most students discover that weeks 6, 9 and 11 are catastrophes waiting to happen, start working backwards.

Plan backwards, not forwards

For each assignment, work backwards from the deadline: editing day, draft day, writing days, research days, planning day. Most students underestimate research time by 50%.

Pick your battles

Not every assignment can be a first-class effort. Identify the assessments with the highest weight and the most time available, and invest in those. Accept that other pieces will be solid 2:1s.

When you've left it too late

If you genuinely cannot finish in time, contact your supervisor about an extenuating circumstances application before the deadline. If you need extra hands, services like ours can help with model drafts on 24-hour turnaround.
